Window Count Balance — N/E More Than S/W
More windows on N/E than S/W — the light gradient follows the cosmic energy grad
Local term: Window balance / fenestration ratio (Window balance / fenestration ratio / directional glazing)
Modern Vastu recommends the N/E > S/W window gradient. Building science confirms: N/E-facing windows provide comfortable, glare-free daylight while S/W windows cause overheating and glare. Energy-efficient building design independently recommends the same gradient — Vastu and green architecture agree.
Source: Contemporary Vastu + green building science
Unique: Green building standards (IGBC, LEED) independently recommend the same N/E > S/W glazing ratio for energy efficiency — Vastu and sustainability aligned.
The Rule in Modern Vastu
Ideal
all
The total number of windows on the North and East walls should EXCEED the total on the South and West walls. This creates a natural light gradient — the light side (N/E) is more open and transparent, the heavy side (S/W) is more solid and protective. Count all windows per wall direction across the entire dwelling. The ideal ratio is approximately 2:1 — twice as many openings on N/E as on S/W.
Acceptable
all
Equal window counts on all sides is acceptable if the N/E windows are LARGER in size. The balance can be achieved through size rather than count. Cross-ventilation (windows on opposite walls) takes priority over strict count ratios.
Prohibited
all
More or larger windows on the S/W than on the N/E inverts the light gradient — the heavy side becomes transparent while the light side is opaque. This is energetically backwards. A home with maximum glass on the SW and solid walls on the NE has its cosmic gradient reversed.
Sub-Rules
- More windows on N/E walls than S/W walls▲ Moderate
- More windows on S/W than N/E▼ Moderate
- Cross-ventilation exists (windows on opposite walls)▲ Moderate

More windows on N/E than S/W — the light gradient follows the cosmic energy gradient. The dwelling should 'face' the light (N/E) and 'shield' against the heavy (S/W). Count and size both matter.
Common Violations
S/W windows exceed N/E windows in count and size
Traditional consequence: Light gradient reversed — the dwelling's cosmic orientation is inverted. Afternoon heat dominates; morning light is blocked. Financial stagnation, health issues, persistent feeling of being 'on the wrong side'.
How Other Traditions Compare
Relative to Modern Vastu
Vedic tradition uses the mountain metaphor — the dwelling's N/E is the snow-capped summit (bright, open), the S/W is the rocky base (solid, grounded).
Tamil tradition mathematically derives window counts from building dimensions — not arbitrary but computed.
Kerala Nalukettu's courtyard design creates the most dramatic window-count gradient — open courtyard vs closed perimeter.
Bengali tradition's curtain-compensation strategy is the most practical remedy for apartments with fixed, builder-determined window placement.

Universal:
Remedies & Solutions
The curtain-compensation strategy (₹3,000-10,000) is the most practical apartment fix. For new construction: specify N/E-heavy fenestration in the builder brief.
Modern VastuAdd sheer curtains to N/E windows (maximize light) and heavy curtains to S/W windows (minimize light) — creates a visual balance correction
Place mirrors on N/E walls to 'double' the perceived light from those windows
Apply frosted or tinted film to excess S/W windows — reduces transparency without removing the window

“More eyes (windows) on the side of prosperity and health; fewer on the side of judgment and weight. The dwelling sees the world through its light-facing eyes and protects itself with its heavy-facing walls.”
