The East Wall Padas
The East wall is divided into 8 padas from the NE corner to the SE corner. Padas
Local term: पूर्व द्वार — इन्द्र पद (Pūrva Dvāra — Indra Pada)
Modern Vastu consultants widely recommend East entrances on Pada 4-5. Many Indian apartment builders now market 'East-facing' flats as premium — when the entrance falls on the Indra-pada, it's genuinely auspicious. The practical benefit: morning light entering the home promotes vitamin D, circadian rhythm, and psychological well-being.
Source: Contemporary Vastu Practice
Unique: Modern practice integrates pada analysis with apartment floor plans: the builder's 'East-facing' claim must be verified at the pada level. A flat with its door on Pada 7 (Bhrigu) is technically East-facing but pada-inauspicious.

Principle & Context

The East wall is divided into 8 padas from the NE corner to the SE corner. Padas 4 (Jayanta — victory) and 5 (Indra — sovereignty) are supremely auspicious — the entrance receives the full blessing of the king of the Devas and the first prana of dawn. Padas 3 (Satya) and 6 (Surya) are acceptable. Corner padas (1, 8) are prohibited — they sit on Sandhis (energy joints) that must not be pierced. This is the second most important pada set after the North wall padas (ED-003).
Common Violations
Entrance on East wall Pada 1 (NE corner) or Pada 8 (SE corner)
Traditional consequence: Corner padas sit on energy joints (Sandhis) of the Vastu Purusha Mandala. An entrance on a Sandhi point creates a permanent wound in the energy grid — the joint never heals properly. Structural cracks, health issues at the joints of the body, and persistent family discord.
Entrance on East wall Pada 7 (Bhrigu — fire sage)
Traditional consequence: Bhrigu-pada amplifies the fire element excessively near the SE corner — the entrance channels too much Agni into the dwelling. Temper flare-ups, skin disorders, and digestive issues are traditional consequences. The fire energy is untempered by the moderating influence of Indra or Surya.
How Other Traditions Compare
Relative to Modern Vastu
Vedic tradition names the East entrance 'Indra Dwara' — the gate of the king of gods. Only the North's 'Kubera Dwara' outranks it for domestic buildings.
Maharashtrian tradition adds that the East entrance should receive the first Diwali lamp illumination — Indra's gate receives Lakshmi's first light during the festival.
Tamil tradition ranks East entrance ABOVE North — unique among traditions. The Agama temple-entrance logic (deity faces East for morning Darshan) extends to the domestic entrance.
Telugu tradition adds elaborate gateway architecture (Toorpu Gumma) for the East entrance — the structural grandeur should match the pada's auspiciousness.
Jain tradition adds that the East entrance through Indra-pada should be wide enough for two people to enter simultaneously — the breadth symbolizes Indra's generosity.
Kerala tradition uses the Kizhakkini (eastern entrance) as the most auspicious entry point. The master carpenter (Ashan) uses astronomical observation to precisely align the Indra-pada.
Gujarati tradition adds elaborate wood-carving on the East entrance — Indra-pada deserves the finest craftsmanship, reflecting the king of gods' status.
Bengali tradition adds the 'Mangal Ghat' (auspicious pot) placement at the East entrance during housewarming (Griha Pravesh) — the pot on Indra-pada receives the first blessing.
Kalinga tradition draws directly from Konark — the Sun Temple faces East for Surya's first rays. The domestic East entrance is a miniature Konark gate.
Sikh-Vedic tradition connects the East entrance to the Gurdwara's Darshani Deodhi — just as the first view through the gateway is of the Guru Granth Sahib, the first morning light through Indra-pada illuminates the household.

Remedies & Solutions
Adjust door orientation to face East — evidence-based spatial correction
Modern VastuIf possible, reposition the East entrance to Pada 4 (Jayanta) or Pada 5 (Indra) — the gold standard for East-facing entrances
If the entrance is on a less favorable pada (2, 6, 7), place a brass threshold and Ganesha image above the door to elevate the pada's energy
If on a corner pada (1 or 8), add a Vastu Yantra and perform a Vastu Shanti puja — the most severe pada error requires the most thorough remedy
Remedies from other traditions
Adjust door orientation to face Purva — Yantra installation and Vedic Havan

“On the Purva wall, the fourth and fifth padas — Jayanta and Indra — are supremely auspicious for the Griha Dwara. He who enters through Indra's pada enters under the canopy of the king of gods, receiving sovereignty over his household.”
“The Purva Bhitti bears eight padas from Ishana corner to Agni corner. Of these, Jayanta-pada and Indra-pada are Shreshtha (supreme). Satya-pada and Surya-pada are Madhyama (moderate). The corner padas and Bhrigu-pada are Heena (inferior).”
“Among the entrance placements on the Purva wall, Indra-pada is foremost — the householder who enters through the Deva-raja's own segment receives protection, prosperity, and victory in all affairs of the world.”
“The East wall entrance through Jayanta guarantees triumph. Through Indra, it guarantees sovereignty. Through Satya, it guarantees honesty in dealings. Through Surya, it guarantees health and vitality. All four are superior to any other wall placement.”
“The Agama prescribes: the Purva Dwara at Indra-pada receives the first prana of dawn. The morning sun's rays enter directly through this pada, illuminating the Griha with the light of divine kingship.”
