The West Wall Padas
The West wall is divided into 8 padas from NW to SW corner. Padas 3 (Sugriva), 4
Local term: पश्चिम द्वार — वरुण पद (Paschima Dvāra — Varuṇa Pada)
Modern Vastu consultants treat the West entrance as acceptable on correct padas — far better than South, slightly less preferred than North/East. The practical advantage: West-facing homes avoid harsh morning sun in the eyes when entering — a comfort benefit in hot Indian climates.

Unique: Modern practice notes the comfort advantage: West-facing entrances avoid morning glare and receive pleasant evening light — practically comfortable even if not vastu-optimal.

Principle & Context

The West wall is divided into 8 padas from NW to SW corner. Padas 3 (Sugriva), 4 (Pushpadanta), and 5 (Varuna) are acceptable — Varuna's pada brings cosmic order. Pada 2 (Roga — disease) is the most dangerous West-wall pada. Corner padas (1, 8) create compound defects. The West entrance is third preference after North and East, but entirely acceptable on the correct padas with appropriate elemental color (grey/silver/white).
Common Violations
West entrance on Pada 2 (Roga — disease)
Traditional consequence: The Roga-pada literally means 'disease' — an entrance here channels health afflictions into the household. Chronic illness, frequent doctor visits, and a pervasive sense of physical weakness are traditional consequences. This is the most feared pada on the West wall.
West entrance on corner padas (1 — NW joint, 8 — SW joint)
Traditional consequence: The SW corner joint (Pada 8) is especially severe — it combines the energy-joint weakness with the SW's heavy earth energy. The NW corner joint (Pada 1) combines with the air element's instability. Both create structural and energetic vulnerability.
How Other Traditions Compare
Relative to Modern Vastu
Vedic tradition warns specifically about Roga-pada — the 'disease entrance' that channels health afflictions into the household.
Maharashtrian tradition adds silver or grey metal work on the West door — matching Varuna's lunar, watery energy.
Tamil tradition specifically recommends Varuna-pada for coastal homes — the ocean's Varuna energy harmonizes with the entrance's Varuna pada.
Telugu tradition associates the West entrance with diplomacy and reflection — Varuna's quality of thoughtful governance suits official residences.
Jain tradition values Varuna-pada for its association with Rta (cosmic order) — aligned with Jain principles of universal law.
Kerala uniquely values the West entrance for climatic reasons — the evening sea breeze is a natural cooling system. Varuna-pada amplifies this water-element cooling.
Gujarati tradition adds that the West entrance should have a Kalash (sacred pot) symbol on the threshold — invoking Varuna's water-pot for purification at entry.
Bengali tradition associates the West entrance with evening and conclusion — acceptable for evening-focused businesses and retirement spaces.
Kalinga's maritime heritage makes Varuna-pada especially significant — the West entrance connects the household to Varuna's ocean governance.
Sikh tradition's four-door Gurdwara model normalizes the West entrance — it's one of four equally valid directions in the universal-access principle.

HemadpanthiClassical Sources
“The Paschima wall's central padas — Sugriva, Pushpadanta, and Varuna — are acceptable for the Griha Dwara. Varuna's pada brings cosmic order to the threshold. Roga-pada (disease) and Pitra-pada (ancestral burden) are to be strictly avoided.”
“The Paschima Bhitti offers three acceptable padas in its center. Varuna-pada is the finest — the lord of cosmic waters and moral order governs this entrance with wisdom. Corner padas and the Roga-pada bring affliction.”
“On the western wall, padas bearing the names of allies (Sugriva) and gentle beings (Pushpadanta) welcome the householder. Varuna's own pada consecrates the entrance with the authority of cosmic law. Roga-pada is forbidden — disease entering through the door is irreversible.”
“The West entrance serves households that face the setting sun — Varuna's domain of conclusion and reflection. The upon padas 3 through 5 the entrada finds shelter; upon Roga and the corners, it finds only affliction.”
