About Thachu Shastra

Thachu Shastra — literally 'Science of the Carpenter' — is Kerala's indigenous architectural tradition codified in the Thachushastram and Manushyalaya Chandrika. Every dimension in a Thachu home is derived from the Thalavara, a proportional system based on the owner's body measurements, making each house literally tailor-made. Its signature expression is the Nalukettu: four blocks arranged around a central open courtyard (Nadumuttam) that functions as a living, breathing Brahmasthan. Specific wood prescriptions — jackfruit (Plavu) for structural beams, teak for doors, rosewood (Pala) for sacred carvings — are non-negotiable. Notably, this tradition is less negative about South-facing entrances than North Indian schools. Essential for families with Kerala heritage and architects working with timber and tropical courtyard designs.

The Vastu Purusha Mandala

Thachu Shastra: വാസ്തു പുരുഷ മണ്ഡലം നാലുകെട്ട് — നടുമുറ്റം (Vastu Purusha Mandalam , Nalukettu four-block house, Nadumuttam central courtyard) — The Nalukettu (four-block house) is the literal architectural expression of the Mandala. Four wings surround the Nadumuttam (central courtyard = Brahmasthan), with each wing mapped to a directional quadrant. The Thalavara proportional system overlays the Mandala with body-measurement-based dimensions.

The Kitchen and the Fire Corner

Thachu Shastra: അടുക്കള തെക്ക് കിഴക്ക് അടുപ്പ് (Adukkala , Thekkinu-Kizhakku -, Aduppu) — Adukkala in Thekkinu-Kizhakku (SE). Kerala Thachu Shastra prescribes exact kitchen proportions based on the Nalukettu (4-block courtyard) system. The Adukkala dimensions are derived from the owner's body measurements using the Thalavara proportional system.

The Master Bedroom and Earth

Thachu Shastra: തെക്കിനി — കന്നിമൂല — തലമുറ (Thekkini south block, Kanni Moola SW corner, Thalamura master's chamber) — In the Nalukettu, the Thekkini (South block) houses the master bedroom. The Kanni Moola (SW corner) is the strongest structural point — the SW column (Thoon) is prescribed to be 1.5× the thickness of the NE column. Kerala tradition is less negative about the South than North Indian traditions — the Thekkini is the most important living space.

The Pooja Room and the Divine Corner

Thachu Shastra: പൂജാ മുറി വടക്ക് കിഴക്ക് — നിലവിളക്ക് (Pooja Muri prayer room, Vadakku-Kizhakku - NE, Nilavilakku standing lamp) — The dedicated Pooja Muri (prayer room) occupies the NE of the Nalukettu's NE wing, with the Nilavilakku (standing lamp) as the centerpiece. The Pooja Muri has minimum dimensions (4' × 6'), a threshold step, and attached havan (fire ritual) space. The devotee faces East. The NE floor is the lowest in the house — water naturally flows toward Ishana's domain.

The Main Entrance and Prana

Thachu Shastra: പടിപ്പുര വാതിൽ പൂമുഖം പടി (Padippura gateway, Vathil door, Poomukham front hall, Padi threshold/step) — East entrance is almost mandatory in Kerala. The Padippura (gateway structure) is architecturally separate from the house door — Pada rules apply to both independently. The Padippura is the most ornate element of Kerala domestic architecture. Door dimensions are calculated using the Thalavara (body proportion) system specific to the homeowner.

The Bathroom and Waste

Thachu Shastra: കുളിക്കാര കക്കൂസ് വടക്ക് — പടിഞ്ഞാറ് മല നീക്കം (Kulikkaara bathroom, Kakkoos toilet, Vadakku-Padinjaru - NW, Mala Neekkam waste removal) — Traditionally, the bathroom was outside the main Nalukettu structure in the NW. Kerala is exceptionally strict about toilet-pooja separation — the Thachu Shastra specifies minimum distances between the Pooja Muri and any waste facility. Modern Kerala practice places the bathroom in the NW or West with maximum separation from the NE wing.

The Main Door Direction

Thachu Shastra: പ്രധാന വാതിൽ (Pradhāna Vāthil) — Pramukha Vaathil (main door) faces Kizhakku (East) predominantly in Kerala. The Padippura (ornamental entrance gateway) is the first prana filter — a separate structure marking the property boundary. The actual house entrance (Poomukham) is the second filter. This dual-entrance system creates graduated prana absorption.

Exposed Beam Over Bed

Thachu Shastra: Valangu (വളങ്ങ് — beam), Utharam (ഉത്തരം — roof beam), Kattil Muri (കട്ടിൽ മുറി — bedroom), Thoon (തൂണ് — column) — Thachu Shastra provides the most detailed beam specifications of any Indian architectural tradition. Beams (Valangu/Utharam) in a Nalukettu are precisely dimensioned using the Thalavara proportional system based on the owner's body measurements. The sleeping room (Kattil Muri) is designed so that major beams fall along room perimeters, never crossing the bed position. Timber species selection is also specified — Teak (Thekku) for main beams, Rosewood (Eetti) for secondary members.

Kitchen Sink and Stove Relationship

Thachu Shastra: Aduppu (അടുപ്പ് — stove), Vellam Paaththram (വെള്ളം പാത്രം — water vessel), Adukkala (അടുക്കള — kitchen), Thekkinu-Kizhakku (തെക്ക്-കിഴക്ക് — SE) — Aduppu (stove) against the Thekkinu-Kizhakku (SE) wall, Vellam Paaththram (water storage) against the Vadakku (North) or Vadakku-Kizhakku (NE) wall. Kerala's Adukkala (kitchen) design in Thachu Shastra achieves maximum fire-water separation through the kitchen's rectangular proportions — the length axis runs NE-SW, placing fire and water at opposite ends. Kerala's heavy rainfall makes water management in the kitchen especially important.

Headboard Direction — South or East

Thachu Shastra: undefined (Tekkōṭṭ Tala, Kizhakkōṭṭ Tala, Vaḍakkōṭṭ Tala) — Kerala tradition is emphatic: 'Vadakku thalavachu urangalle' (never sleep with head to the North). South-head is non-negotiable. The Thachu Shastra prescribes that the Kattil's headboard be the taller, more ornate end — so the direction is architecturally encoded into the bed's design. Travelers from Kerala are known to check and rotate hotel beds, and many carry a small compass. The Padinjattini (west wing) bedroom of the Nalukettu has the bed oriented with head South, feet North.

The Square Plot Ideal

Thachu Shastra: Chatursra Parambu (ചതുസ്ര പറമ്പ് — square compound), Bhoomi Pariksha (ഭൂമി പരീക്ഷ — soil examination) — Chatursra Parambu is verified through Bhoomi Pariksha (soil testing) in addition to shape assessment. Kerala Thachu Shastra prescribes five soil tests — color, taste, smell, sound (when struck), and water absorption — that the square plot must pass before it is deemed truly auspicious. A square plot on bad soil is rejected.
