Kitchen Door Direction
Kitchen door should open from E/N, never face a bathroom door, and not be visibl
Local term: Kitchen door direction, kitchen sightline (Kitchen door direction, kitchen sightline)
Modern Vastu focuses primarily on the kitchen-bathroom facing prohibition (the most impactful rule) and secondarily on kitchen visibility from the entrance. In open-kitchen apartment layouts, the 'visibility from entrance' rule is relaxed — modern living accepts open kitchens. The bathroom-facing rule remains non-negotiable.

Unique: Modern practice relaxes the entrance-visibility rule for open-kitchen layouts while maintaining the bathroom-facing prohibition as non-negotiable.

The Rule in Modern Vastu
Ideal
all
The kitchen door should ideally open from the East or North side of the kitchen — allowing the cook to receive auspicious energy as they enter. The door should NOT face a bathroom door (see ED-085). It should open inward into the kitchen. Ideally, the door threshold provides a transition between the fire-zone kitchen and the adjacent room's energy.
Acceptable
all
A kitchen door opening from the South or West side is acceptable if it doesn't face a bathroom or toilet. The key prohibitions are: never face a bathroom door, never face a staircase directly, and never be the first thing visible from the main entrance.
Prohibited
all
Kitchen door directly facing bathroom door (see ED-085 — Maha Dosha). Kitchen door directly visible from the main entrance (guests shouldn't see the cooking area first — it reveals the household's internal functioning). Kitchen door facing the main bedroom door (fire energy disturbs rest).

Principle & Context

Kitchen door should open from E/N, never face a bathroom door, and not be visible from the main entrance. The cooking zone's fire energy must be contained and its domestic activity shielded from visitors.
Common Violations
Kitchen door facing bathroom door
Traditional consequence: Maha Dosha — waste energy contaminates food preparation. See ED-085 for full severity.
Kitchen directly visible from main entrance
Traditional consequence: Domestic fire-zone exposed to visitors — reveals household's private functioning, creates social discomfort, and allows external energy direct access to the cooking process.
How Other Traditions Compare
Relative to Modern Vastu
Vedic tradition connects the cook's first sight upon entering the kitchen to the quality of the cooking that follows.
Tamil tradition specifically prescribes the cook's first-step direction — East-facing entry.
Jain Sattvic cooking purity adds an extra layer of kitchen-approach requirements.
Kerala courtyard-mediated kitchen access provides the most elegant architectural solution.
Bengali tradition is pragmatic — kitchen-dining adjacency is prioritized over door-direction specifics.
