The Neem tree (Azadirachta indica) should be planted in the northwest zone of the compound. The northwest is ruled by Vayu (Wind god) and the Air element — the prevailing wind direction in the Indian subcontinent carries the Neem's medicinal vapors (phytoncides and nimbidin compounds) into the home, purifying the air naturally. The tree's bitter, cooling energy complements the Vayu zone.

North or west placement is acceptable. The north benefits from the Neem's cooling Water-like quality, and the west provides afternoon shade without blocking morning sun. In all cases, maintain 10-12 feet distance from the structure.

NE, E, SE
Northeast and east placement blocks morning sunlight — the most critical Vastu requirement. Southeast (Agni corner) conflicts elementally with the Neem's cooling nature. The Neem's dense canopy should never shadow the divine NE quarter.

Principle & Context
The Neem tree is Vastu's natural physician. Unlike the Peepal and Banyan — which are too powerful for residential compounds — the Neem is welcomed inside the property. Its medicinal phytoncides purify the air, its leaves repel insects, and its cooling energy balances the home's microclimate.
Common Violations
Neem tree blocking northeast or east morning sunlight
Traditional consequence: Loss of morning prana and healing UV rays. The health benefit of the Neem is negated by blocking the more important sunlight energy. Residents experience lethargy, vitamin D deficiency, and dampened spirits.
Neem tree roots encroaching on the house foundation
Traditional consequence: Structural damage to the dwelling. While the tree's energy is beneficial, physical root damage creates instability — both structural and financial.
Neem tree cut down without planting a replacement
Traditional consequence: Removing a Neem without replacement invites illness into the household. The protective medicinal barrier is broken. Plant a new Neem or Tulsi as replacement.

Neem datun (twig) for daily dental hygiene is a Vedic-era practice still followed. Neem leaves offered to Shitala Devi (goddess of cooling) during epidemics. The tree's bitter taste classifies it under Vayu-Akasha tattva in Ayurvedic and Vastu systems.
Gudi Padwa ritual: Neem + jaggery consumption for the new year. Kadulimb branches hung over doorways during epidemics. In the traditional wada, Neem trees line the compound wall as a medicinal wind-screen.
