Local term: Curved wall, radius wall, non-rectilinear partition, architectural curve
Modern architecture frequently uses curved walls as design statements. Vastu consultants advise restricting these to the NW quadrant. If curves exist elsewhere, masking with straight furniture or false panels is the most practical remedy.

Unique: Modern curved-wall trend — architects prize curves but Vastu restricts them to NW.

The Rule in Modern Vastu
Ideal
NW
Curved walls in NW zone only, per modern Vastu consensus integrating classical prescriptions with contemporary building practice — the architect must verify compliance for optimal results.
Acceptable
N, W
N or W zone curves tolerable.
Prohibited
NE, SW, center
NE, SW, or multiple curved walls create energy disruption.
Sub-Rules
- Curved wall is located in NW zone, aligning with air element's circular motion▲ Moderate
- Curved wall in NE or SW zone disrupting energy inflow or stability▼ Moderate
- Multiple curved walls creating swirling energy patterns throughout the dwelling▼ Moderate

Curved interior walls redirect energy flow and should be restricted to the NW (Vayu's quarter) where circular air movement is natural. Curved walls in NE deflect straight-line Prana inflow; in SW they destabilise earth-element anchoring. Limit curved walls to one or two instances at most.
Common Violations
Curved wall in the NE zone deflecting energy inflow
Traditional consequence: Cosmic Prana that enters in straight lines through the Ishaan gateway is deflected sideways. Energy never reaches the dwelling's interior — it ricochets off the curved NE wall and disperses. Blocked opportunities, scattered thinking.
Multiple curved walls creating swirling energy patterns
Traditional consequence: Energy flows in circles without settling. Occupants feel disoriented, indecisive, and unable to focus. The dwelling becomes an energy whirlpool — motion without direction.
How Other Traditions Compare
Relative to Modern Vastu
Vedic Vakra Bhitti — curved wall as exception with strict directional placement.
Wada strict rectilinearity — no curved walls in tradition — distinctive to Hemadpanthi practice per the Samarangana Sutradhara and Hemadpanthi building traditions.
Tamil Valaivu Suvar — only in temple ritual passages, not domestic.
Telugu Nerugu Goda — straight walls as default — distinctive to Kakatiya practice per the Samarangana Sutradhara and Kakatiya inscriptions.
Hoysala temple curves vs. domestic rectilinearity — context matters.
Nalukettu strict rectilinearity — no curved walls whatsoever.
Gujarati Haveli rectilinearity — curves are a modern import.
Bengali colonial curves — Art Deco influence not aligned with Vastu.
Kalinga temple curves — ritual context only, not domestic — distinctive to Kalinga practice per the Shilpa Prakasha and Kalinga temple texts.
Gurdwara dome curves vs. domestic rectilinearity — distinctive to Sikh-Vedic practice per the Vedic Vastu principles adapted through Sikh architectural traditions.

Remedies & Solutions
Straighten: ₹15,000-60,000. False panel: ₹5,000-20,000. Furniture masking: ₹5,000-30,000.
Modern VastuIf the curved wall is in NE or SW, straighten it during renovation — reconstruct as a flat wall along the cardinal axis
Build a flat false-wall panel in front of the curved surface to create a visually and energetically straight wall
Place angular furniture against the curved wall to create a straight boundary — bookshelves, wardrobes, and cabinets can mask the curve
Hang a large rectangular painting or mirror on the curved wall surface — the rectangular frame creates a visually straight reference that counteracts the curve
Remedies from other traditions
Straighten NE/SW curved walls. False flat wall panels. Angular furniture.
Vedic VastuStraighten or mask with furniture.
HemadpanthiClassical Sources
“The Vakra Bhitti (curved wall) shall be used with great restraint in the dwelling. If employed, place it in the Vayavya (NW) quarter where the wind element naturally moves in curves. In the Ishaan or Nairitya, the curved wall bends what must remain straight.”
“The straight wall is the rule; the curved wall is the exception. Wind circulates in curves — only the Vayavya quarter accepts curved construction. In all other quarters, straight walls discipline the energy flow along cardinal and ordinal axes.”
“Maya permits the Valaivu Suvar (curved wall) only in the quarter of Vayu. The curve redirects energy — in the wind quarter this redirection follows nature; in the earth or water quarter, it disrupts the elemental flow.”
“Vishvakarma warns: the curved wall is a river bend — it changes the direction of flow. Place this bend where the flow naturally turns (NW) and never where flow must enter straight (NE) or remain anchored (SW).”
“The Sutradhara cautions against multiplying curved walls within the Gruha. One or two curves in the Vayavya are wind-guides; three or more curves throughout the dwelling create a whirlpool of energy that disorients the occupants.”
