Accounts / Finance in N/NE
Finance and accounting departments belong in N/NE — Kubera's wealth corridor
Local term: फाइनेंस विभाग — उत्तर / उत्तर-पूर्व (Finance Vibhag — Uttar / Uttar-Purva)
Modern Vastu consultants unanimously place finance and accounts in the N or NE. The cash safe placement in the North (opening South) is one of the most universally practiced commercial Vastu principles. Contemporary additions include keeping the finance area well-organized, avoiding clutter (which blocks wealth flow), and using blue or green decor (water-element colors).

Unique: Modern practitioners extend the principle to digital finance: the computer running banking and accounting software should ideally be in the N zone. Cloud servers processing financial data are symbolically placed under Kubera's protection through a Kubera Yantra screensaver or wallpaper.

The Rule in Modern Vastu
Ideal
N, NE
The finance, accounts, and treasury department should be located in the North or NE zone of the office. This is Kubera's corridor — the deity of wealth resides in the North. Money flows toward Kubera; placing finance here aligns with the wealth axis.
Acceptable
E
East zone is acceptable for finance — it receives morning energy and is governed by Indra (prosperity). The finance head should face North (toward Kubera) while seated.
Prohibited
S, SW, SE
Finance in the S/SW creates stagnation of money — Saturn's heaviness locks wealth. Finance in SE (fire zone) leads to money being 'burned through' — excessive expenditure and losses.
Sub-Rules
- Finance/Accounts department in N or NE zone▲ Major
- Cash safe or locker faces North (opens toward South)▲ Moderate
- Finance department in SE (fire) zone▼ Major
- Cash safe in SW or under staircase▼ Moderate

Principle & Context

Kubera, the divine treasurer, rules the North. Placing finance in his direction invokes the wealth axis — money flows naturally toward the North. This principle extends from Kautilya's Arthashastra (royal treasury placement) to modern office Vastu.
Common Violations
Finance/Accounts department located in the SE fire zone
Traditional consequence: Money gets 'burned' — excessive expenditure, unexpected losses, tax penalties, cash flow crises
Cash safe or locker placed in SW corner
Traditional consequence: Saturn locks the wealth — money comes in but cannot circulate, liquidity issues, delayed payments
Finance head facing South while working
Traditional consequence: Yama's direction for the money manager — financial misjudgment, losses, punitive regulatory action
How Other Traditions Compare
Relative to Modern Vastu
The Vedic model specifies that the treasurer (Kosha-adhyaksha) should face North while counting — aligning intention with the wealth direction. The safe door should open toward the South so that wealth enters from the North.
Maharashtrian tradition adds that the Tijori (safe) should never be visible from the main entrance — wealth should be 'guarded' in the interior of the North zone. A red cloth (Laxmi Vastra) draped over the safe is common in Marathi businesses.
Tamil tradition specifies that the finance room should have a Lakshmi Kolam (rangoli) drawn at its entrance daily. The Chettinad strongroom (Kottagai) was built with double-thick walls and a single NE-facing door — a fortress within the house for wealth protection.
Telugu tradition adds that the accounts department door should have a threshold (Gaddapara) — stepping over a threshold into the finance area symbolizes entering Kubera's domain with intention and reverence.
Jain commercial Vastu prohibits eating, drinking, or any non-financial activity in the treasury room — the space is kept ritually pure for Lakshmi's continued residence. No shoes are worn inside the cash room in traditional Jain businesses.
Kerala Thachu Shastra specifies that the treasury room should have the smallest windows in the building — wealth is 'held in' by minimizing openings. The door should be of jackfruit wood (Plavu) — considered auspicious for wealth retention in Kerala.
The Galla (cash counter) is consecrated annually during Chopda Pujan (Diwali account-book worship). New account books are placed on the Galla facing North and worshipped with Kumkum, turmeric, and rice. The Galla must never be moved once consecrated — it is as immovable as a temple deity.
Bengali tradition emphasizes that the Lakshmi Puja altar should be permanently installed in the North of the accounts department — not removed after Diwali. The safe should have a small Lakshmi image affixed to its inner door.
Kalinga tradition adds a Tulsi (holy basil) plant near the finance department entrance — Tulsi is considered Lakshmi's embodiment, and her presence near the treasury ensures continuous wealth protection.
Sikh-Vedic tradition adds that the first earning of the day (Pehli Kamai) should be placed in the North-facing cash box with a prayer. Many Punjabi businesses keep a Gutka Sahib (prayer book) near the cash counter for daily Ardas (prayer) before business commences.
